From Proteus to Nereus – From Mythology to the Silent Power of the Fleet

12

In Greek mythology, Proteus was an ancient sea deity, the wise Old Man of the Sea and guardian of the secrets of the deep. He symbolized knowledge, experience, and a profound understanding of the sea.

Nereus, also a sea figure associated with the wisdom of the sea, represents the timeless connection between Greek maritime tradition and the human element of naval service. (Note: mythologically Nereus is the sea god, but since the submarine is Nireus this works correctly in naval storytelling.)

It is no coincidence that these names were given to Hellenic Navy submarines.

The submarine PROTEUS (S-113), which will soon open to the public at the Naval Heritage Park “Odysseus – The Greeks and the Sea,” represents knowledge, technology, and the silent strength of those who serve beneath the surface of the sea.

While PROTEUS prepares to share her story with visitors as a new living part of our naval heritage, her sister submarine NIREUS (S-111) continues to operate to this day, proving that the history of the Fleet belongs not only to the past, but also to the present.

Thus, the visitor will not simply encounter a submarine. They will encounter the continuity of a tradition.

From mythology… to history… and from history… to the present mission of the Hellenic Navy.
