The Ionian Islands Come Aboard Battleship “G. AVEROF”
World Music Day – 21 June 2026
The Battleship “G. AVEROF” Naval Museum is organizing a special musical and cultural event entitled “A Musical Voyage” on Sunday, 21 June 2026, at the Maritime Heritage Park “Odysseus – Greeks and the Sea”, located at Flisvos Marina, in celebration of World Music Day.
The event brings together two emblematic representatives of the Ionian musical tradition, the Corfu Philharmonic Society “Kapodistrias” and the Tragoudistades of Zakynthos, in a unique encounter of history, culture and maritime heritage on and around the historic Battleship “G. AVEROF.”
The programme will begin with the participation of the Tragoudistades of Zakynthos, who will introduce audiences to the living tradition of the Ionian serenades (kantades) and the distinctive vocal and polyphonic musical expression of the Ionian Islands.
This will be followed by a musical parade by the Corfu Philharmonic Society “Kapodistrias” within the Flisvos Marina area, reviving the historic tradition of the Ionian philharmonic bands and symbolically leading the audience towards Battleship “G. AVEROF.”
The musicians of the Philharmonic Society and the Tragoudistades will then embark on the historic vessel, where the ceremonial lowering of the Greek flag will take place. During the ceremony, the “Hymn to Liberty” by Dionysios Solomos, set to music by Nikolaos Halikiopoulos Mantzaros, will be performed in a particularly moving moment that connects the maritime history of the Nation with the intellectual and musical heritage of the Ionian Islands.
On the deck of the ship that became synonymous with the victories of the Balkan Wars and the course of modern Hellenism, the meeting of the musical traditions of Corfu and Zakynthos with Battleship “G. AVEROF” acquires a special symbolism, honouring freedom, memory and the continuity of the Greek Nation.
Following the completion of the ceremony, the Corfu Philharmonic Society “Kapodistrias” will present its main musical programme in the event area, offering the public an evening dedicated to music, history and the timeless relationship between the Greeks and the sea.
The event is a tribute to the Ionian musical tradition, to Dionysios Solomos, Nikolaos Halikiopoulos Mantzaros, Ioannis Kapodistrias, and to the enduring contribution of the Ionian Islands to the shaping of modern Greek identity.
At the same time, it highlights the role of Battleship “G. AVEROF” as a living bearer of history and memory, as well as the role of the Maritime Heritage Park “Odysseus – Greeks and the Sea” as a meeting place where maritime heritage encounters culture, education and the arts.
